St. Bernardine of Siena was especially known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, Bernardino devised a symbol "IHS" the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek, in Gothic letters on a blazing sun. The devotion spread, and the symbol began to appear in churches, homes and public buildings. The Latin going around the sun is from Phillipians 2:10 "In nomine Jesu omne genu flectatur caelestium, terrestrium et infernorum." (So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.)
